A Rocky Road to Niederlassungserlaubnis

I want to share a personal milestone that has left me brimming with happiness: finally receiving approval for my long-term residence application! This means I won't have to worry about renewing my residence permit until 2033. Who knows, maybe by then, dual citizenship will even become a reality!

Permit struggles in Cologne

Looking back, I remember the tough times I faced while living in Cologne. The process of getting my long-term residence application approved was tedious and draining. I was transferred from one disinterested case worker to another, all of whom seemed unwilling to extend a hand to help me navigate the bureaucratic maze. I sometimes felt lost and disheartened, wondering if I would ever get anywhere with my application. True to my fears, no positive news awaited me until the day I moved to a different city.

A new beginning in a friendly city

Things took a turn for the better when I relocated to Aachen. The city and its people welcomed me with open arms, and I began to feel a sense of belonging—a feeling I sorely missed while navigating the concrete jungle of Cologne. Here, I was able to tackle the application process with renewed energy and newfound hope that I would finally get the recognition I deserved for the work I’m putting in to positively contribute to Germany as one of its residents.

Making Germany home

My journey in Germany has spanned over six incredible years, during which I've built a beautiful life with my husband and our three children. I've also managed to establish a successful freelance career, complete with official registration, tax payments, and provisions for healthcare, pension, and more. These accomplishments have all contributed to making me feel grounded and secure in my new home.

Along the way, I've also formed meaningful relationships with people who have become a vital part of my support system. These friendships have played a significant role in helping me adapt to life in Germany and have made my journey all the more rewarding.

When I finally held that approval in my hands, I was flooded with an indescribable sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. All the struggles, the bureaucratic hurdles, and the moments of self-doubt suddenly felt worth it. This milestone symbolizes not only the recognition of my years in Germany, but also the life I've built, the work I've put in, and the bonds I've formed in this new home. I'm filled with gratitude for everyone who has supported me on this journey, and I look forward to the years ahead as I continue building my life here.
